Organization Behavior

Prerequisites:  Acceptance in the Management accelerated degree program.

Credit:  3 Credit Hours

Catalog Description:  An experiential approach to learning about the essentials of organizational behavior.  Examines  (1)  the individual in organizations;  (2)  the skill-building needed to develop effective work relationships and teams;  (3)  the skills needed for leadership and the critical leadership functions in the managerial role including:  creating, maintaining and changing organizational culture; decision making, power and influence, coaching, empowerment, and performance appraisals;  and  (4)  the management of effective organizations.  During this course, students learn group facilitation.

Mission: The mission of the accelerated major in Management is to provide the CPS student with relevant, contemporary management theory in a practical, real-world framework.  In this way, students can apply what they learn in their regular workday activities.  Most of our students are content experts in their chosen business function.  However, because their academic preparation has been interrupted by personal and/or career commitments, they have seldom been exposed to the fundamentals of management.  Although many are promoted into managerial positions, (or aspire to be), they are often left with only in-house or external seminars as the basis for learning management science.  The student in the accelerated Management major develops relevant, applicable skills within a solid theoretical framework of Management Science.

Purpose:  This course covers skills and techniques associated with assessment of organization culture, staffing, leadership and organizational mission.

Objectives:  Students who successfully complete this course will be able to:

1.       Recognize the relationship between the person and the organization.

2.       Define the roles of change, stress and adaptation in the organization.

3.       Design and develop multiple organization structures, including functional, matrix, geographic, organic and team structures.

4.       Develop skill-building in group process and facilitation, including listening, summarizing and leading.

Write up a paper on your Job Diagnostic Survey results.

Develop a "Chapter Two" for your thesis, which describes the current structure of your case study organization.  This should include the Board of Directors (how many, internal vs. external members, unusual members, etc.), major divisions, headquarters location, number of employees, type of organization structure (functional, geographic, teams, matrix, etc.).  Include all information you can gather which relates to how your Case Company is structured.
