in Management
Prerequisites: Acceptance
in the Management accelerated degree program.
Credit: 3
Credit Hours
Catalog
Description: Examines management's responsibility to
customers, employees, and society at large; how successful managers maintain
awareness of key issues in business legislation, regulation and ethical
standards. Also examined are EEO/AA,
staffing, training and development, labor unions, consumer protection and
environmental issues, planning, presenting, and developing an executive report.
Mission: The mission of the accelerated major in
Management is to provide the CPS student with relevant, contemporary management
theory in a practical, real-world framework.
In this way, students can apply what they learn in their regular workday
activities. Most of our students are
content experts in their chosen business function. However, because their academic preparation has been interrupted
by personal and/or career commitments, they have seldom been exposed to the fundamentals
of management. Although many are
promoted into managerial positions, (or aspire to be), they are often left with
only in-house or external seminars as the basis for learning management
science. The student in the accelerated
Management major develops relevant, applicable skills within a solid
theoretical framework of Management Science.
Purpose: The
following are key issues for this module:
Equal Employment Opportunity, Safety, Consumer Protection, Environmental
Issues, Regulation and Legislation.
Objectives: Students
who successfully complete this course will be able to:
1.
Prepare for
business decision-making based on the legal, regulatory and ethical environment
of the business.
2.
Recognize
the role played by both law and ethics in business conduct and decision-making.
3.
Research
the basic principles of law as they relate to business.
4.
Identify
the multiple methods of settling disputes in business.
Course
Outline:
This course is
conducted over four weeks and requires that students work in teams to make
presentations about legal and ethical topics in management over the length of
the course. Therefore, each class
session includes a major presentation by a student team, followed by discussion
and critique of the case presented.
Each case must include discussion of the three domains;
1. Customers
2. Employees
3. Society at large
General
Assignments and Evaluation of Student Work:
Students discuss
cases and present options for legal and ethical decision-making. In addition, they are required to write
position papers and complete in-class assignments.
There are no
tests; however, grading will be determined by completion of assignments in
terms of their quality, thorough coverage of the topics and timeliness. Due dates are assigned for each class
activity.
Course/Program
Assessment: Grading is
based on the quality, thoroughness and timeliness of all assignments, along
with class attendance, class participation, group projects and class
activities.
